International Baccalaureate (IB)

THREE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMES

The International Baccalaureate program as a whole consists of Three Levels of Educational Programs.

Primary Years Programme (PYP):

Kindergarten to Class 5

The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is an instructional programme for students aged 3 to 12. This programme prepares students for the IB Middle Years Programme, even though it is no longer a whole prerequisite for it. It seeks to create an instructional framework which is enticing and difficult for the kids with the aid of emphasizing their holistic increase in the course of their developmental years. It offers the college students with a company basis for IB’s different programmes.

It focuses on five key elements which are:
• Concepts
• Knowledge
• Skills
• Attitudes
• Action

Middle Years Programme (MYP):

Class 6 to Class 10

The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is an educational programme for students aged 3 to 12. This programme prepares students for the IB Middle Years Programme, although it is not a complete prerequisite for it. It seeks to create an educational framework which is engaging and challenging for the children by emphasizing on their holistic growth during their developmental years. It provides the students with a firm foundation for IB’s other programmes.

The IB MYP curriculum requires students to receive instruction in eight subject groups:

  • Language acquisition.
  • Language and literature.
  • Individuals and societies.
  • Sciences: including biology, chemistry and physics.
  • Mathematics.
  • Arts.
  • Physical and health education.
  • Design.

Diploma Programme (DP):

Class 11 to Class 12

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), is the most popular of all IB Programmes. The IB Diploma Programme (DP) is mainly for students aged 16 to 19. IBDP is considered as one of the best pre-university courses worldwide. The main objective is to develop an excellent depth of knowledge within students. The programme provides a qualification which is internationally accepted for entry into higher education and is recognized and respected by many leading universities across the world.

IBDP curriculum has two major components:

  1. The six subject groups are:
    • Group 1: Language
    • Group 2: Second Language
    • Group 3: Individuals and Societies
    • Group 4: Experimental Sciences
    • Group 5: Mathematics and Computer Sciences
    • Group 6: The Arts
      Further, each subject group is divided into different courses. Our IB classes in Mumbai cover all subject groups and courses thoroughly.
  2. The Diploma Programme Core further comprises of three important components:
    • Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
    • Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS)
    • Extended Essay (EE)

Internal Assessment (IA):
In simple terms, Internal Assessments (IA) are the exercises that are internally evaluated by the subject teachers, while the examinations which the students write comes under External Assessment. Internal Assessments are mandatory for every IBDP student. They account for around 30-50% of the IBDP final assessment, and this is assessed through a single individual evaluation. This evaluation may involve a hands-on approach, use of certain data-bases or knowledge banks. IA for Chemistry, Biology, and Physics: Conducted in the labs and the best 2 among these count as the student’s IA IA for Math: Portfolio Based (Different for Each Level) IA for English A1: Oral Commentary, Oral Presentation, and World Literature Assignment (1 in SL, 2 in HL) IA for French and the language B courses: 2 Orals (One individual, one in a Group) IA for History: Involves conducting historical research (Just 1 assignment on any topic from the curriculum)

Extended Essay (EE):
The Extended Essay (EE) is a research paper which is compulsory for all IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) students. The essay has to be of up to 4000 words. EE gives students an opportunity to conduct an independent research or investigate a topic of their interest. Students of the IB Certificate programme don’t have to make the EE. It is important that the subject for the EE is taken from the field of one of the IB subjects. The IBDP board suggests that the essay topic be from any general subject taught or is being taught under the IB Diploma Programme. The subject on which the EE is to be written should ideally be the one that the student has formally studied, although this is not compulsory. Extended essays are evaluated by external assessors, who are examiners appointed by the IB board. The total obtained marks are converted into a grade from A to E. It is a similar grading system used for Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and students can gain up to 3 points for their IB Diploma based on the grades achieved for EE and TOK.
